Sustainability
At Pen Wiwar, our love for Wales is at the heart of everything we do. Our designs are inspired by the mountains, coastlines, wildlife, language and landscapes that make this place so special, so protecting the natural world around us has always been part of the brand.
Sustainability is not something we see as separate from Pen Wiwar. From day one, it has shaped the garments we choose, how our products are printed, the packaging we use, and the everyday decisions we make as a small Welsh business.
We know that clothing has an impact, so our aim is simple: to make the most considered choices we can. From organic cotton and recycled materials to local printing and compostable packaging, we are always looking for ways to reduce waste, support better production practices, and create clothing that is made to be worn and loved for longer.
Choosing Our Garments Carefully
Before any Pen Wiwar design is printed, we take time to choose garments that feel right for the brand.
Quality is a big part of that. We want our clothing to look good, feel comfortable, and last well beyond one season. For us, this is an important part of sustainability. The longer a garment is worn and enjoyed, the less likely it is to become part of fast fashion.
Across our range, we use clothing and accessories made with carefully selected materials, including organic cotton and recycled materials. These choices help us create products that better reflect the values behind Pen Wiwar, without compromising on comfort, fit or quality.

Organic Cotton & Recycled Materials
The garments we source are chosen with materials and traceability in mind.
The cotton used in our knitwear is 100% organic, while selected products also include recycled materials such as recycled polyester and recycled nylon. Organic cotton helps reduce reliance on conventional cotton production, while recycled materials give existing resources a new purpose.
The garments we choose are also backed by recognised certifications, including GOTS for organic cotton, GRS for recycled materials, and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® for textiles tested for harmful substances, where applicable.
These details matter to us because we want every Pen Wiwar product to feel good in more ways than one. When someone chooses Pen Wiwar, we want them to feel part of a community that shares a love for Wales, a respect for nature, and a belief in making more thoughtful, sustainable choices.
Ethical Production & Responsible Suppliers
Sustainability is not only about materials. It is also about people.
We work with garment suppliers who place importance on responsible production, fairer working practices, material traceability, and high environmental and social standards across their supply chains.
This means looking beyond how a garment looks on the surface and considering how it has been made, where the materials have come from, and whether the people involved in production are treated fairly, with care and respect.
As a small brand, we simply cannot control every part of the supply chain ourselves, but we can choose who we work with. That is why supplier values, certifications and transparency are important parts of our decision-making process.
Printed Locally in North Wales
Once our garments have been sourced, they are printed locally in Penygroes by Peris and Corr, an eco-friendly screen-printing studio based on the edge of Eryri National Park.
Printing locally allows us to reduce unnecessary transport where possible, stay closely involved in the process, and work with another small Welsh business that shares many of our values.
It also means we can check colours, review samples, and make sure each design is finished to the quality we expect before it reaches our customers.
Packaging with Less Waste
Our commitment to more responsible choices does not stop with the clothing itself.
We carefully consider the packaging we use for each order. Our mailers are fully compostable, while our packaging and thank you cards are made using recycled paper.
These may seem like small details, but for us they are part of a bigger approach: reducing unnecessary waste wherever we can and making sure each stage of the customer experience reflects the values of Pen Wiwar.
A Reuse-First Approach
Sustainability also shapes the way we show up offline.
When we need something for pop-ups, markets or displays, we try to reuse first rather than buy new. Some of our pop-up setup has been built using old drawers and furniture from Dan’s grandad, giving the brand that rustic, personal feel while staying true to our commitment to reducing waste.
It is a small example, but one that says a lot about how we want Pen Wiwar to grow: thoughtfully, creatively and without losing sight of where we come from.
Always Learning, Always Improving
We are proud of the choices we have made so far, but we also know sustainability is an ongoing process.
As Pen Wiwar grows, we want to keep learning, improving and making better decisions wherever possible. Whether that means exploring new materials, improving packaging, supporting local suppliers, or finding new ways to reduce waste, our aim is to keep building a brand that reflects our love for Wales and the landscapes that inspire us.
